Bad Week!

6/8/2013

Picture
It's been a bad week here! It started with Ollie molting. Poor fellow lost so many green feathers that we're surprised he has any on his body! Mommy put some molting treatment in his food and that seemed to help him feel better. The molt is slowing down now, and we hope our baby brother is feeling much better.

Then tropical storm Andrea came through, triggering a migraine that plagued mommy on and off for 3 days. Not only that, but it caused mommy and daddy to have sinus problems from blowing in all of that tropical mess and then the grass pollen shot up once the storm passed. And then, to top it all off, mommy and daddy got a virus that just made them feel beat and busted after stressful weeks at work. Mommy had 2 meetings and it was the last week of school for daddy, which was pandemonium.

So Zack and I were the only ones that came out unscathed this week. We've tried to comfort Ollie, mommy and daddy the best we can. They so appreciate our support. We try. We try really hard to be super sweet and comfort them, especially at times like this. That's our job, after all - to love and comfort each other and our human companions. What can I say? We do our best. We must have done alright, because mommy and daddy went by the grocery store earlier and brought home Jiffy Pop. There are no holidays or celebrations, so we must have been good!

That's all today. Thanks goodness it's the weekend. We need it! I hope you have a good one, and that we recover from this week that best us up.

Luv,

Chloe

Yay for Summer!

5/30/2013

Picture
The calendar may say it’s the spring days of May flowers, but the weather in South Carolina is already singing summer. The temperatures are already warming up to the eighties and low nineties, the pollen has slacked off, and most telling: the wind and rain have stopped. Mommy always says the air dries up and stops moving when it gets hot here, and darn if she isn’t right.

It’s alright with me. I like the sunshine, and I find the longer days pleasant. We have air conditioning, so the heat and humidity don’t burn or droop our feathers (although mommy is known to give us more frequent baths when the weather warms up – now why does she do that?” Mommy moves my cage to the big window every morning when we get up since the sun is coming up then, and I get over 3 hours of time when they get home from work. I love it! There are always birds at the feeder, and squirrels hanging around under it trying to catch some wayward seed. Chloe’s up on all the hot gossip with our outside buddies. The bluebirds are raising their young in the house out back, and there are even a couple of Carolina wrens that perch on the picnic table and back stair banister and sing to me several times a day. Ah yes, summertime, full of life, activity and fun!

I say hooray for spring and summer. It’s the best time of the year. There’s a lot going on and much to enjoy during this pleasant and festive season. And as a bonus, my birthday is on June 24th. I’ll be
three and if Chloe’s recent birthday is any indication then we will have gifts, celebrations, and partying again soon. Yay!

I hope you’re doing well. Have a happy Friday tomorrow and a great weekend.

Luv,

Ollie

Ready for a Long Weekend!

5/24/2013

Picture
Yea, birdy buddies, we sure are ready for the long weekend here! Of course, you know  me. Any reason to celebrate is a good one. I'm a party bird. I think I enjoyed Chloe's birthday more than she did. I love to celebrate!

And why not? When you're a pet bird, life is good. We've got it made. And now mommy and daddy are going to be home with us for 3 whole days. Yippee! Let the free play fun time begin! Sleeping in, followed by preening, playing, hanging out on daddy's shoulder and listening to Ollie sing, showing Chloe how to properly destroy her toys - these are a few of MY favorite things!

I'm excited. Life is good and now it's a long weekend and summertime. Hooray!

I hope you've all had a happy Friday and that you have a good weekend planned. Be safe and have fun if you're traveling. If you aren't (like us), then enjoy the extra time to rest and do some things you want to do.

Have a great weekend.

Luv,

Zack

Celebrations!

5/19/2013

Picture
Our house is full of celebrations these days! Mommy and daddy celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on Thursday, May 16. We decided to call it "flock formation day" so we could all join in the fun. They took a couple of days off work, and it was so nice to have them at home. We're getting spoiled! It's going to be tough when they go back to work tomorrow (maybe).

Then on Friday our friend, Disco the Parakeet, was on The Today Show. We all sat in front of the TV and watched. It was so exciting to see him on TV, and to see his fine flock too! He has a lovely family, he performed superbly, and best of all, he said on Twitter and Facebook that he had a lot of fun doing it - which is the most important thing.

Mommy and daddy went to see Star Trek Into Darkness on Friday. They liked it so much that they took some friends from out of town to the theater to see it Saturday. They won't shut up about that movie. Really, they were impressed. It must be good. I can't wait to see it when we can get it on our Apple TV. Mommy said she'd buy it on iTunes just as soon as it comes out. But her walking around the house saying "shall we begin?" is a bit creepy. That must be one heck of a villain they have in that movie. She said there's another scene that will make it obvious who in the theater was a Trekkie and who wasn't. But I can't say which one it is because I don't want to throw out any spoilers for those that haven't seen it yet.

Today was church. It's the first Sunday in Pentecost, which is a celebration of the day the Holy Spirit came to us. Big festival service - mommy and daddy were at church longer than usual. Then it was time for mommy to get back to work to get ready for the week. She bought groceries, cleaned the house, and checked her work email. I'm glad she got groceries early, because we had a nasty storm around 4:00 that dumped 4.5 inches of rain on us in 45 minutes. It just went on and on and on. The driveway flooded, but thankfully we have a gravel driveway, so it's already drained off. I think there's more chances of rain tonight and tomorrow. I sure hope  our friends in the mid-west are safe. We saw some scary things about tornados in there on The Weather Channel earlier! If you don't have a NOAA weather radio, it might be a good idea to get one. You can also set your smartphone to get weather alerts through The Weather Channel app too. As for us, we're fine, and the house is clean too.

Tomorrow is my birthday! Actually, it's a celebration of the day mommy and daddy adopted me. I'm already 10, but we celebrate on May 20 because that was my "gotcha day" in 2010. It's hard to believe it's been 3 years! I love it here. This is a great home and my mommy and daddy are the best.

Speaking of that, mommy did finish the rough draft of her sci-fi novella, Incursion, last Monday. She knew it would be busy for the rest of last week, so she finished it in a big push at the beginning of the week before everything else took off. Good planning on her part, I think.

So that's what's happening in our corner of the world. I hope you're all doing well. Stay safe if you're in the path of the bad weather, and take care. I hope you have a good week.

Luv,

Chloe

A Call to Spring

3/23/2013

Picture
Hello, Spring? Yes, I believe you forgot to set your reminder app. You're late. You were due to arrive 3 days ago but Old Man Winter is still around and dumping cold rain on us.

It's not pleasant.

Still, we're optimistic that you'll arrive soon. Mommy fertilized the roses, trees, and grass. She got out her summer shoes. Daddy even painted the picnic table and found the sunshade for his car. Zack, Ollie and I have thinned the feathers to our spring coats. We're all ready for Easter, spring, and the fun it brings. Sunshine and flowers and pretty green grass, and all that jazz.

We believe in you, spring. Don't let us down.

Maybe you got delayed at the airport. It happens. Mommy and daddy were delayed nearly 4 hours on their last flight. Maybe your car broke down. Maybe there was an accident on the Interstate. I understand delays. Just do your best to get here soon, because this whole winter thing is getting old.

Thanks for your prompt attention to my respectful request.

Luv,

Chloe

An Interesting Week

2/17/2013

Picture
Last week was an interesting week for me. It started with Chloe letting me take over her Twitter account last Monday. I've had a lot of fun with that even if I don't tweet as much as she does. She's enjoyed her "week hiatus" from online activities but I'm sure she's looking forward to returning to her account tomorrow.

Mommy and daddy went to Ash Wednesday services last Wednesday, so they came  home a bit late. Fortunately, they were home in time to watch Arrow and Supernatural, so all was well. Daddy was off work Friday, so he made up for the lost time by playing with us a lot then. Mommy is off tomorrow for President's Day. It's a shame they couldn't be off on the same day, but that's how it happens sometimes.

They yesterday we got snow. In SC! I know, that's pretty rare. We even had "thundersnow" which was very interesting. I watched from the big sliding glass door in the kitchen where they sit my cage during the day. Zack and Chloe got pretty upset by it, but I thought it was neat to watch. It didn't last long but it was a sight to see all those huge, snow pellets bouncing across the backyard. Wow! Of course, it's all melted away today - which is also typical for SC. It rarely snows and when it does, it doesn't stick around long because it always warms back up quickly. The weather this weekend has been insane. It was sunny and in the 60's Friday, a wintery mix yesterday, and sunny, windy and 49 degrees today. That's winter in SC for you. If you don't like the weather then just wait a minute and it will change.

Now I'm sitting in the window singing a song along with the dishwasher and just happy for this wonderful day. I hope all of you are doing well. Take care and have a great week!

Luv,

Ollie

Why Is Everybody Picking On Me?

2/9/2013

Picture
I don't understand why everybody is picking on me. Just because I'm a small keet doesn't mean I'm weak. Zack and Chloe pick on me sometimes. Just yesterday, Chloe grabbed my tail and threw me off the play gym.

Why? Just because I'm different doesn't mean I'm a punching bag. I'm small but mighty. I got back on that play gym last night, just to show everybody that I'm not afraid and I deserve respect too.

Thankfully, mommy and daddy understand. They take care of me and protect me, and they're good to me. Okay, I'll admit that sometimes I do provoke the bigger birds. I enjoy chasing Zack. It's funny!

Well, for the most part we've learned to live together well. I just wish they wouldn't pick on me.

That's all today. Have a great weekend.

Luv,

Ollie

Dear Santa

12/13/2012

Picture
Dear Santa:

Greetings and salutations from our flock to you! I hope this letter finds you healthy and happy and that 2012 has been an excellent year for you, Mrs. Clause, the reindeer, and the elves.

The purpose of my correspondence is to share our "wish list" for Christmas. You've always been so good to us, and we appreciate your benevolence! We have been good birds this year. Zack and I fought less this year, which I think is a great sign of progress. Ollie sang more songs than ever and mommy and daddy have worked hard. We'd be happy to welcome you in our home this Christmas Eve/Christmas morning!

Let's start with me, the little lady of the flock. This year, I'd like a Cozy Corner. A recent mishap that Zack had with his Happy Hut (that I'm sure you've heard about) resulted in both of us losing our huts. We need something to snuggle in to stay warn on those cool nights, so a Cozy Corner it is. I'm also quite fond of chew toys - those are also welcome. And, of couse, I love peanuts as well. Keep mine roasted and in the shell, please. I love snapping them open. Snap, crackle, pop, yum!

Picture
My baby budgie brother, Ollie, is a modest young man. All he asks for are millet spray and toys to shake around. But Santa, I really think Ollie deserves a new, bigger cage. He never complains, but he really needs more room for his swing and toys. You made me such a nice one a few years ago. Could you hook up my baby brother too?

Picture
And of course, you  know my big brother, Zack, VERY well. I'm sure you heard of Zack's recent mishap and resulting leg injury with his Happy Hut. He's all recovered now and we're glad, but we want to make sure he's safe. He loves snuggling and I believe a Cozy Corner would be a great treat for him. Zack is also an avid chewer, so wood toys and shred toys are great for him. And for the stocking, don't forget the Jiffy Pop and the Lafabers Featuring Popcorn!

Picture
And last but not least are mommy and daddy. They'd like a new stand for their TV. The have the den fixed up nice and all, but that TV stand - eww. It's the Waldo of the entire downstairs. Geeze, folks, what doesn't fit here? Please bring them a nice new stand that will work better with the TV they have.

As for stocking stuffers for them, they aren't hard to please. A book will be good for mommy. She's quiet when she reads and, well, quiet time is good sometimes! She could also use one of those stress/squeeze balls because her hand gets achey when she types a lot at work, and that helps. Daddy likes Dunkin Doughnuts coffee, dark chocolate, and something fun - I think mommy told you she had a special idea for a great surprise for daddy. I don't want to post it here because daddy reads this blog, but you know what the surprise is! ;)

So that's it - the wish list for our flock. We appreciate your kindness and thoughtful consideration of this list. If you have any questions, please feel free to call mommy or daddy. They always love talking to you and are willing to consult with you on any and all of these gifts.

Merry Christmas Santa! We love you!

Luv,

Chloe

I'm Alright!

12/6/2012

Picture
Hi everybody! Thanks so much for your well wishes and support this week as I dealt with my hurt foot. I went to the vet for a follow up visit today, and he said I'm healing well. In fact, he said the medication I was on was too strong and I don't have to take it any more. The foot is still bruised, but it's healing up well and overall I'm doing great.

What a wild few days it's been! I am feeling much better, though. I've been chattering with Chloe and Ollie, playing with my toys, making the rounds in my (now happy hut free) cage, and hanging out with mommy and daddy. Yes, I'm healing up nicely, and I'm so happy to be recovering!

Not only that, but mommy put presents under the Christmas tree for me, Chloe and Ollie and said we could listen to the radio station that plays all Christmas music all the time tomorrow while she and daddy are at work. Oh boy! I love this time of year. Christmas is so exciting, and my birthday is soon after. Lots of goodies are on the way.

So I'm fine, friends. I'm healing up well and I'm alright. Thanks again for your prayers, concern, and well wishes. You guys are the best! I hope you're sweetness is rewarded with a lot of great loot this holiday season!

That's all today. Take care and have a Happy Friday tomorrow.

Luv,

Zack

Clean Bill of Health

4/13/2012

Zack, Chloe and I had to go to the vet today for our annual check up. We got a clean bill of health! Not even a Vitamin D shot for Chloe, and we were all happy for that.

The only thing is that they scooped up some of our poo on a stick to look at. I thought that rather odd, disturbing and frankly sick. Especially when the vet said I had "textbook stools." What? You mean somebody out there is sick enough to write books on bird poo? What kind of people do things like that?

Anyway, he said we're all healthy and good  looking birds. We all got checked out, our hearts listened to, and wing trims. Zack threw him for a bit of a loop because he didn't react the way the vet expected him to. When his checkup and wing clip were done, Zack just sat there and glared at the vet. The vet looked at Zack and said "I think he's pissed." Mommy found that amusing. She was like well, yea! We've been bringing him here for 12 years. I think he knows you. Zack probably passed frightened and scared into aggrivated and pissed off by these visits years ago. Zack is such a pro at handling humans. He should really teach a "understanding humans" psychology class for the rest of us birds! He's spent his entire life with humans and seems to "get them" so well. Maybe I'll be as wise as he is one day. He's a great mentor.

At least Chloe and I were respectable and didn't challenge the vet with a "drop dead" look. The vet even said budgies were his favorite. Well, he actually said budgies are every vet's favorite because our bites don't hurt. I'm not sure if that's good or bad. I'm glad to be a favorite, but now I wonder about my ability to defend myself if I'm threatened or challenged. He also thought my singing was neat.

So we survived the annual vet visit. God willing, we can stay healthy and happy and not have to do that again for another year.

Happy Friday to all of you. I hope you have a great weekend.

Luv,

Ollie
